CULTURAL DOCUMENTATION
2013-2020
I started Folk Rebellion in 2013 because something was happening that nobody had named yet. I was losing my memory. I had figured out early on that this is what happens when your life moves increasingly through a screen. As an early aughts digital strategist I was a canary in the coal mine of sorts for digital dementia and brain rot. To process and shed light on this scary topic I started making things.
Over ten years it became a full cultural platform: articles, memes, analog gifs, t-shirts, patches, zines, posters, events, online content, public gatherings, a manifesto, a decade of writing and speaking. It was one of the earliest movements in the digital wellness space before that was even a category. What resulted was a record of a cultural shift, made in real time, by hand, by one of the earliest to the technocritical movement we see today.
